Comfort Dogs Reuben and Aaron and handlers James Casner, Bonnie Sloan, and Tim & Christy Kramer returned to Roseburg, OR to be with members of the community for the one-year anniversary, October 1st, of the shootings at Umpqua Community College. Bay Cities Ambulance invited the teams and sponsored a day of support for first responders and their families at their headquarters in Roseburg. Bay Cities Ambulance also arranged visits to Douglas County Emergency Communications 911 Division and to the Mercy Hospital Emergency Room staff. Many of the people they met that day remembered the love and compassion Comfort Dogs brought the year before. That evening the teams attended an informal candlelight vigil at Stewart Park where they were reacquainted with others from Umpqua Community College. Before returning home Sunday morning, the teams had the privilege of worshiping with our brothers and sisters in Christ at St. Paul Lutheran Church and did a meet and greet following the service.
I am feeling blessed to participate in many community events this fall, including the Suicide Prevention Month Conference at Napa Valley College, the Human Trafficking Outreach program (with Chaplain Lee Shaw), and Fire and Life Safety Day. I also enjoyed cheering students on at the St. John’s Get on Track Fundraiser. It always amazes me at how quickly humans can move with only two legs!
My team and I wish you a safe and blessed Thanksgiving!
There is a great article about Golden Retrievers from the American Kennel Club mentioning the Comfort Dog Ministry and Lutheran Church Charities. To view, use this link:
